New spooky story alert! As is practical of late, I broke it down into a couple of social media-ready images, but it’s ultimately just a short story… I think? I experimented with alternating between poetry and prose, in a manner not unlike the verse-and-chorus structure of a song. It’s a little bit Junji Ito, a little bit Death Stranding (iykyk), and a little bit me working through my perspective on some family stuff of late. 💀🪦

So I’ve had this really creepy plastic baseball bat for years, from my grandparents’ old Halloween decorations collection… it looks neat, no doubt, but what’s its story, I wondered? I could probably just Google the punny name on its hilt (“Ghouliville Slugger”), but where’s the fun in that? I’d rather do what I do best: pop on some Photoshop and then essentially just write a lore entry for a nonexistent horror game!

The time has come for another anthology of short, spooky fiction from “The Terragenesis Collective”! That’d be me and some other fine folks in the online creative writing community who previously released It Was a Dark and Stormy Night…, in which my story “Repocalypse” appears (also on YouTube!). This second collection, The Many Lives of Devon Reeves, moves from a classic phrase as a binding theme to one simple similarity: Every tale has a character named “Devon Reeves.” Who–or what–is this individual? Any commonalities may be mere coincidence, or they may mean something greater… check it out here on Smashwords and decide for yourself.
My contribution this time is “A Thing Forgotten,” in which a wayward young man remembers a picture book from his childhood that no one else seems to… and perhaps they ought not to. It’s something of a spoiler, but since I’m really happy with how this turned out, check out the illustration from the talented horror painter Jenyce Garay (@JenyceGArt):

Waiting for the moment.
Happy Summer, all!
To beat the heat, I decided to knuckle down with the AC on and finish a story I’ve been kicking around for a few months. It’s a brief bit of a contradiction: realistic, yet outlandish; a joke, yet serious; autobiographical, yet anything but.
In any event, I had fun teasing it out, and I hope you do as well! So grab a coffee, get a seat with a good view of your surroundings, and swipe right to hear about a city kid’s trouble with balancing his passion for writing and his, well…

At long last, another story! This one’s been sitting on my computer for a while, actually; it was my first short fiction assignment for the English 484 class I’m currently in, and while the main readings for the course are various iterations of Little Red Riding Hood from throughout history, the prompt here was pretty open-ended.
Seeing as I tend to do better with some guidance (at least when a grade is on the line), I followed a brainstorming suggestion from early on–what I call the “Yahoo Email Password” method of drafting–wherein I mashed together two or three concepts I had preexisting interest/skill in and saw what emerged. I wasn’t particularly satisfied or invested in what I came up with, even after working on it to literally the last second (and a few after that–some rapid-fire negotiation with the professor was in order when the submission portal glitched and made me technically late)… but from the online classmate’s comments and peer review session that occurred this morning, it sounds like I may have sold myself short in my estimate!
But hey, as always, it’s your call. So with just a little more ado, please enjoy…

Happy September, all! As is generally the case, I’m in no mood for a graceful opening segue, so I’ll just cut to the chase: It occurred to me a little while ago that while I may have mentioned it in passing, I haven’t actually given out much information about my next book, and that would be as good a way as any to pad out this blog between now and its eventual release.
So, let’s start with the name: It’s going to be called Love&Darkness (stylized as one word), and it’s another short story collection. The name alludes to the fact that, while there are still the lighthearted and “Twilight Zone-y” tales you saw in Distortions, a disproportionate amount will concern courtship, romance, and the brokenhearted. Additionally, though there’ll be at least as many “actual” stories as in its successor, about half of the book will be composed of poetry, with both elements deliberately arranged in thematic patterns. Right now, it’s about half-finished—I won’t say exactly how many pieces will be in it, because even though I have a precise number in mind, it might fluctuate later. I’ll say this, though: It’ll be at least twice as long as Distortions, and include reprints of all the stories posted on this site, plus most of the poems. A few weeks ago, I finished my most recent story “Were” (as in “werewolf”), and I’m currently at work on the next one, “Hi!”
Unfortunately, my attempt to quicken my writing schedule by establishing goals has had little to no effect, as I’ve thrice missed a self-imposed deadline. But since I’m a firm believer that if you don’t have a good reason to procrastinate, you might as well thoroughly explain your bad one, I’ll tell you a couple of the factors behind why I’m dragging my feet this time:
…And that’s all I’ve got to say for now, really. I Photoshopped together an idea I have for the cover, which I’ll give to Mr. Duquette in the near future so he can work his magic with a canvas and/computer. I’ll be moving up to Seatttle in about a month for my first quarter at University of Washington—it certainly won’t get any easier to write up there, but I won’t rest until you can read Love&Darkness as it stands in my mind right now!
